The English-Speaking Union Mauritius has been conducting the National Spelling Bee Competition for the past 20 years in Mauritius.
To mark the 20th edition of their flagship activity, the idea was to explore uncharted territory to expand the Spelling Bee concept among learners of Mauritius. The collaboration with the Special Education Needs Authority and it now being on the Board came at the right time. They are exploring the feasibility of the Spelling Bee for our learners with disabilities and special education needs.
An ‘Initiation to Spelling Bee’ was launched in 3 SEN institutions of the North. It has been a real pleasure seeing the learners going beyond their comfort zone to spell English words. The experience has enabled them to be more focused, to pay attention, to memorise words, to be exposed to words in English & to learn through enjoyment.
The pictures below give an insight on how it went on at Mille Soleil Association for the Welfare of Disabled Persons, La Courte Echelle du Nord & Association Anou Grandi.
We believe in our learners and they can also do it. We trust that this collaboration can materialise into a National SEN Spelling Bee in a near future.
