A workshop focusing on the theme ‘Fostering Inclusive Education among School Leaders in Mauritius’, organised by the Special Education Needs Authority (SENA), kickstarted, this morning, at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex.
The seminar was led by Professor Steve Sider who teaches at the Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada.

Present on the occasion, the Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, underpinned the significance of the workshop which she said, addresses the essential topic of inclusion. She recalled that her Ministry’s policy is anchored in promoting inclusion at all levels so that every child is taken onboard on the path of development and educational success. ‘We aim at ensuring that each child receives the best that we can offer, and all enjoy the same privileges and chances,’ stressed the VPM.

The Education Minister underlined that it is even more critical to provide the necessary conducive environment to SEN learners as they move to mainstream schools adding that they should be welcomed wholeheartedly and be surrounded with a thriving environment for them to grow and to learn in the best conditions.

Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun also remarked that SEN educators and Heads of Schools have a tough job to perform, which she observed demands commitment, compassion and courage. The need to equally have the right mindset and attitude to guide SEN learners to optimum progress and successful schooling was also highlighted by the VPM.
According to her, it is essential to harness the support of parents, educators, Heads of Schools, and that of other related stakeholders to achieve our targets, and to provide the scaffolds required for them to rise to success.

As for the Director of the SENA, Mr Deewakarsingh Authelsingh, he spoke of the mission of the SENA in ensuring that all its learners have access to quality education. He dwelt on the importance of having the right leadership, mindset and attitude, which he said, will increase the efforts being made to take every child onboard in the education sector.
In addition, while pointing out that inclusive education is a gradual process, he reaffirmed SENA’s commitment to drive towards this vision.
